My Piping Influences So Far

 

William J. MacLeod
    I would not be where I am today if it wasn't for Pipe Major William J. MacLeod.

    William J. MacLeod was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on October 13th, 1914. Son of Donald and Catherine MacLoed, Isle of Eigg. Scotland. He recieved his education in Winnipeg and was employed with the Winnipeg Electric Company before joining the Canadian Forces during the Second World War, September 2nd, 1939, until February 1946 as Pipe Major of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders  of Canada (overseas). He arrived in Pine Falls on April 15th, 1947 becoming employed in the Electrical Department of the Manitoba Paper Company.
    Pipe Major MacLeod has accomplished many great things throughout his lifetime. He has directed the Pine Falls Girls' Bugle Band and he is the founder of the Pine Falls Stirling Pipe Band. He has served as president of the Winnipeg River Wildlife Association and the Royal Canadian Legion #64. He was Past Master of Pine Falls Masonic Lodge #154 as well as being the recipient of the "Manitoba Good Citizenship Award" in 1979, "Recreation Volunteer of the Year 1981 Award" and "Distinguished Service Award -- International Music Camp" in 1984.
    He was founder and coordinator for Piping and Drumming at the International Music Camp -- Peace Gardens, North Dakota; and The Saskatchewan School of the Arts -- Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan. He has served as Piping Adjudicator in many activities in Canada and the U.S.A., as well as being the Pipe Major of the Winnipeg Massed Pipe Band, which appeared at the Parade of the Roses in Pasedena, California, 1972-73 & 76. The Silver Broom events in Carlstad, Sweden; Winnipeg, Manitoba and Berne, Switzerland. He is a member of the Khartum Temple Pipe Band, The Prairie Pipe Band Association and The Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association. He became involved in making leather bags for the bagpipe, swan neck design.

Robert Fraser

    Pipe Major Robert Fraser is another of my major piping influences. I first met Pipe Major Robert Fraser when I joined his great organization The Lord Selkirk Boy Scout Pipe Band. Mr. Fraser has been extremely valuable in helping me to develop my skill and understanding of everything there is to know about piping.
